The Janković Castle renovation project was launched in August of 2016 by the Virovitica-Podravina County as the castle owner and project holder. The County registered the project with the title
„Preparation and Implementation of Integrated Development Programmes based on Cultural Heritage Renovation“.
The reconstruction of the Janković Castle in Suhopolje is an integrated programme oriented at salvaging the culturally, historically and architecturally valuable castle – by reviving the cultural heritage and the rich history of the Janković family and also the cultural history of Suhopolje and the Virovitica-Podravina County. The conversion of the castle into a Visitors’ Centre gave the castle importance that, with time, it had lost. The reconstruction of the castle created a modern contemporary multimedia exhibition space uniting tourist, natural, cultural, artistic, material and non-material sights and heritage of the Virovitica-Podravina County. By implementing the project, the first of four Janković Castle reconstruction stages in Suhopolje has been realised. Apart from the reconstruction of the castle itself, the project implementation was accompanied with a series of other additional activities oriented at the revitalisation and promotion of the rich heritage with the aim of creating a recognisable tourist product. The most important results of the project are: – Reconstruction of and equipping the Janković Castle complex and conversion into the Janković Castle Visitors’ Centre, – Creation of a study for the valuation of the cultural heritage of the Janković family, – Creating a concept and equipping the multimedia exhibition space of the Centre with a creative workshop lab, – Creating a space with interactive content for visitors and the local community. The reconstruction of the castle enabled various cultural and tourist events taking place and major historic events, important for the history of the Janković family and the Virovitica-Podravina County, have been revitalised as well. The renovated castle and its new function represent an additional content that significantly adds to the tourist offer and contributes to the further development of the local and regional community. The total cost of the project is HRK 39,767,716.50. The project was conducted by the Virovitica-Podravina County in cooperation with its partners: The Tourist Board of the Virovitica-Podravina County, the Virovitica City Museum, the VIDRA Development Agency and the Suhopolje Municipality. The project was co-financed with the grants of the European structural and investment funds (European Regional Development Fund).
